Mammograms

Why Mammograms Are Important

Mammograms are the single most effective tool in the early detection of breast cancer and are proven to save lives. Early detection enables doctors to implement a treatment plan before symptoms begin, improving the odds for a positive result.

Women who are regularly screened for breast cancer have a 47% lower risk of dying from the disease compared to those who don't. And with early detection, the five-year survival rate is nearly 100%.

When should I get screened?

Women of average risk for breast cancer should follow the recommended screening guidelines according to age:

  • Age 40: Have the conversation with your primary care provider about breast cancer screening. Begin yearly mammograms based on their clinical recommendation and your preference.
  • Age 50: Consult with your provider and determine whether you should continue yearly screening or switch to mammograms every two years.

Women with a family history of breast cancer or other high-risk factors are encouraged to have a conversation with their provider before the age of 40.

If you experience signs or symptoms of breast disease at any age, please alert your provider right away.
